Review: TSO Presents: Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back In Concert

Updated: May 27, 2019

The Concept:

What can honestly be better than watching any Star Wars film in IMAX? How about watching Star Wars on a giant screen in Roy Thomson Hall while the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) plays the entire score, live!

In January, a Facebook friend posted he was watching TSO perform the Star Wars: A New Hope score. That sounded amazing to me and instantly purchased tickets for my favorite Star Wars film, Empire Strikes Back.

The Cast:

When it comes to TSO, there isn’t a cast. It would be easier to post an image listing all who were involved from the TSO. However, I can speak to the Conductor, Sarah Hicks. While reviewing the brochure she is a highly credited composer and IMO provided an amazing performance. Starting the show with a yoda backpack and ending with a lightsaber.

The good:

  • Being this was my first experience watching a live orchestra, it was completely mind blowing.

  • The seats were comfortable and spaced out for above average sized people

  • The acoustics/volume for an events like this was near perfect.Only 2 occasions where the symphony drowned out the film.

  • The TSO was completely on point. Music flowed perfectly with the film. I even teared up a bit when the sad song played prior to Han being frozen in carbonite. It was that powerful.

The bad:

  • The seat location we ended up with was painful. It was the 4th row but deep in the far left so we spent the better part of the event craning our necks to watch the film on the screen.

  • Huge opportunity missed when the conductor didn’t use a lightsaber to conduct the show. Despite how unrealistic this request would be.

Things that stood out:

You have never experienced the power of an orchestra until it is right in front of you blasting out the score to your favorite franchise.

Why we should watch or not watch it:

Goes without saying but you must experience this! However there is a huge gap of time in between shows. So if you want to experience this you can see them on the following:

Steven Reineke, conductor

With Toronto Symphony Orchestra
