Cosplayer Spotlight: HelloChica89
Updated: May 27, 2019
Hey everyone, Todd is here reporting for DroidsCanada.com. This week, we have been lucky enough to score an interview with HelloChica89. We have been looking forward to posting this interview and we hope everyone will enjoy it!
Droids: This week we have a treat for our fellow geeks! We get to sit down with the HelloChica89. ! Thank you for sitting down with us for an installment of Cosplayer Highlight!
Droids: Easy/typical questions first. What was the first convention you attended? What was the most memorable part of that convention?
My very first convention was Tokyo in Tulsa in 2014. I had been eyeing it for a while (7 years to be exact!). My friend was a writer for the local paper and she did a piece on Tokyo in Tulsa and she interviewed me. The headline was “TnT Attendance is a Teacher’s Dream”. Probably my most memorable part of the convention was getting to hang out with all of the voice actors. Like I’ve been listening to these people for years so to see them in person was surreal. I had a Sakura pass which allows you to eat dinner and mingle with the guests! I got an autograph and a hug from J. Michael Tatum. I am a huge Hetalia fan so when I told him that, he responded in France’s voice with “Oh Thank you sweetheart!” That made my day!
Droids: Is there a cosplay you will not do? If so, and Why?
I probably won’t do any cosplay where I show my midriff simply because I am not confident enough to do it just yet. I have had Kei from the anime “Dirty Pair” on my list for years but I can’t bring myself to do it.
Droids: What was your favorite cosplay costume that you've done so far?
This is a hard one. But since I have to choose, I would have to say Kuranosuke from “Princess Jellyfish”. He was my first cosplay ever. I was going to do teenage Bulma from Dragon Ball but I came across “Princess Jellyfish” and I fell in love. He is such a unique character with such a big personality and his clothes are amazing. It took a while to decide on which outfit I to create. I did not make the dress but I altered it. It was my first time doing any type of cosplay and I wanted to do a good job. Plus, my favorite color is purple and I love the wig!
Droids: Do you have a favorite convention? If so, which one is it, and why?
My favorite convention is Tokyo in Tulsa simply because it was my first one. I went with my friends and I also got to meet Cynthia Cranz. Amongst other roles, she plays Chichi in the Dragon Ball series. My niece (who was 11 at the time) drew a picture of Chichi for Cynthia to autograph and she started crying. Like…it was just amazing to see someone be loved by people of all ages. The environment is very down-to-earth and the events are great. I especially love the concert and raves.
Droids: What was the hardest costume for you to make to date? What made it so difficult?
My hardest cosplay was definitely my Human Luna cosplay. I made the dress from scratch WITHOUT real sewing machine. I used one of those handheld ones. I had never made a dress before so I was trying to figure all of that. I had recently purchased the crazy “Legend of Zelda” cartoon from Walmart so that, Sailor Moon, and Youtube videos kept me going. School was still in session so I was teaching too! I spent all of May, June, and July working on that thing! But I am so proud of it! I’m in the process of fixing it though!
Droids: Is there a cosplayer that you look up to for inspiration?
I look up to a lot of people but Brichibi Cosplays is one that I look to often. She is very body-positive and courageous and I just love seeing her work her magic. Like she truly loves what she does and does not care if others don’t like it. She isn’t afraid to be herself. I did not see many cosplayers of color while growing up so to see someone be confident in such a niche craft is inspiring. I love everything she does!
Droids: Is there a Con that you have not gone to yet but aspire to do so?
ANIME EXPO! Life tends to get in the way and I have never been able to plan for it! But one day I’ll be there!
Droids: Do you have a funny experience from a comic con that you want to share?
While waiting in line for food, we came across a girl who was cosplaying as Loki. We complimented each others’ cosplays and everything and then she started talking about how she was friends with Tom Hiddleston. Then she said that she had been on a date with him in England and had all of these cool adventures with him. The story got more outlandish as she went on and my friend and I just nodded and tried to avoid looking at each other. We were so happy to get our food and get back to our room as soon as possible!
Droids: Is there anything else you want to add about cosplay or yourself in general or perhaps promote something that may not have already been covered?
Well I have a few cosplay-related hobbies which include my blog My Geek Parade where I write about my geeky hobbies. You can follow me on IG at hellochica89 and geekparadeshop to keep up with my cosplays and clothing designs!
Droids: It was an absolute pleasure sitting down with you! Congratulations on your continued success as an amazing cosplayer!
We hope to see you at a Convention some time!
