Movie Review: The Hitman's BodyGuard

Updated: May 27, 2019

Who wouldn’t want to see an action comedy with Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Samuel L. Jackson (Snakes on a Plane)? It feels like it would be the perfect match made in ActionCom heaven! But was it?

“The world's top protection agent is called upon to guard the life of his mortal enemy, one of the world's most notorious hit men. The relentless bodyguard and manipulative assassin have been on the opposite end of the bullet for years and are thrown together for a wildly outrageous 24 hours. During their journey from England to the Hague, they encounter high-speed car chases, outlandish boat escapades and a merciless Eastern European dictator who is out for blood.”

Now, I watched this film 2 months ago and forgot all about it till now. Shoot me if you would like, but it gives you an idea how much of an effect this film had on my life. The film boasts a rating on 38%. That is frickin horrible for Ryan Reynolds. SLJ has made some terrible films, but Ryan Reynolds? Come on. They also bring on Gary Oldman (Bram Stokers Dracula, Nolan Batman Trilogy), Salma Hayak (From Dusk Till Dawn, Desperado) and of course Elodie Yung (Netflix Daredevil S2) as Reynolds love interest. So in terms of cast, they have a solid start.

The concept of a World Famous Hitman requiring a bodyguard in the realm of things is completely Ludacris. Speaking from purely a writer perspective, this film was the biggest demonstration of lazy writing that I have ever seen. They relied too much on the chemistry of Reynolds and SLJ to make this film work. Not saying it didn’t, but it felt like the story was empty. We are in the pit at Buffalo Bill’s and the writers are sending down reused jokes, over the top action and obscene language to keep us intrigued.

Overall, it took me 3 attempts of viewing this film to complete it. Not because it wasn’t a good film. Clearly did good as it was 30 million to make and grossed 187 million. But that’s probably due to star power. The film just couldn’t me interested, even with the great chemistry these 2 had.
