Movie Review: Get Hard
Updated: May 27, 2019
I never claimed to be a clever man. So after binge watching a guilty pleasure show called Storage Wars, I needed something to watch to fil, the boredom void. Recently added to Netflix was Get Hard. I used to be a huge fan of Will Ferrell years ago and didn’t mind Kevin Hart, so I decided to give it a shot. Regardless of all the negative things I heard.
“When obscenely rich hedge-fund manager James (Will Ferrell) is convicted of fraud and sentenced to a stretch in San Quentin, the judge gives him one month to get his affairs in order. Knowing that he won't survive more than a few minutes in prison on his own, James desperately turns to Darnell (Kevin Hart) -- a black businessman who's never even had a parking ticket -- for help. As Darnell puts James through the wringer, both learn that they were wrong about many things, including each other.”
I am not 100% sure who thought this movie would be a good flick, but here we are. 29% on Rotten Tomatoes and 6/10 on IMDB. The film did well as it cost 40 million to make and made 111.8 million in the USA alone. But when you break this film down, it really wasn’t that good. Honestly, the comedy was snippets from previous films and cut/pasted together to make a film in the end. The overall story wasn’t that bad, but I don’t find that Kevin Hart nor Will Ferrell have good chemistry together. Playing stereotypical roles for each other and constantly trying to top each other throughout the film was annoying.
I understand that these type of films are not supposed to make sense and be over the top, but the whole “preparation” is completely unrealistic. Training Will Farrell how fight, prepared to perform oral sex on men and to smuggle a gun up his butt? That’s a little farfetched. Maybe the part where he learned to fight can be believable but not as Kevin Hart as a trainer.
However, at the end of this film, I was checked out. I may have accidentally grunted a chuckle but this film needs to be destroyed and removed from Netflix immediately.
