Movie Review: Baywatch
Updated: May 27, 2019
The MountainMan has been completely adamant that this movie would fail. I won’t lie. I was on that band wagon as well. Seriously ask yourself, how many times can The Rock improve/safe/make a franchise from nothing? We found out with Baywatch.
“When a dangerous crime wave hits the beach, the legendary Mitch Buchannon leads his elite squad of lifeguards on a mission to prove that you don't have to wear a badge to save the bay. Joined by a trio of hotshot recruits, including former Olympian Matt Brody, they ditch the surf and go deep under cover to take down a ruthless businesswoman whose devious plans threaten the future of the bay.”
The critics has literally given this film a beating. Why? Because they don’t understand it. They didn’t understand its purpose. It wasn’t to spawn off a new series of movies or bring back the TV show. It was to mock it. It was to purposely be a parody. That’s how I interpreted it. I could be wrong, but from the dialogue, to the walk on’s and the straight up jabs at the slow motion scenes from the TV Show, it’s kind of obvious I am right.
The reviews I have read on it either goes 1 or 2 ways. Either 1), people are “butthurt” that it mocked the original Baywatch. Did you not watch the Baywatch or any show from the 80’s or 90’s? They were cheesy. Campy. Mind Numbing. That was the trend during that time period. People tuned into Baywatch every week to see Yasmine Bleeth or Pam Anderson running down the beach in a skimpy bathing suit. Not to watch David HassleHoff aka Mitch Buchannan solve crimes. Who are kidding? Or 2) Not understanding the campiness or cheesy stories. Yes it is utterly ridiculous that Lifeguards are trying solve murders and stop drug from coming to the bay. BUT BEING CAMPY AND CHEESY WAS THE POINT OF THE FRANCHISE YOU MUPPET.
Anyways. The casts boasts huge stars like The Rock and Zac Efron. The Rock makes this movie. As always, steals the show with his over the top humor and vulgar language while Zac Efron plays an arrogant Olympic gold medalist. Zac seems to really thrive at being an arrogant, cocky and comedic type of character. The roles for both of them were perfect. Also enjoyed the supporting cast that were clearly knock off’s of the original actors from 25 years ago.
Overall, I suggest giving this movie a shot. Ignore the critics on this one as it was a homerun for me. And yes Pam and David are in the film for like 2 minutes. LOL
