TV Review: Defenders

‘Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist team up to fight crime in New York City.’
IMDb rating 8/10 Metacritic 63% Rotten Tomatoes 75%
So recently Netflix has released the first season of the Defenders which involved the teaming up of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. The idea being that the Hand being a global behind the scenes villainous group and are looking at taking down New York because it needs to be burned and razed but not before getting one vital thing from the underbelly of New York City.
It was a little bit of a shock right off the bat to realize that they only gave us 8 episodes instead of the standard or what appears to be standard Marvel series set of 12 episodes. As well the episodes were more of a standard hour long TV episode (sans commercials) at around the 40-45 minute mark instead of nearly a full hour like the other previous series. I will admit it didn’t feel dragged out thankfully but while watching it knowing ahead of time how much was left I kept running scenarios as to how they would wrap it up with the time remaining in the series.
I know the series is very Iron Fist centric and most of the people that watched it are probably thinking that this is what Iron Fist should have been. But they had to build up Iron Fist and the character to give the backstory to explain what his whole deal was with the Hand and then manage the rest of the team’s connection with the Hand to get them to band together. Even all the sidekicks and secondary characters were pulled into things very well throughout the series with Claire, Misty, Colleen and Foggy/Karen.
Now with Netflix preparing to drop the next series later this year with The Punisher you would think that there would be some kind of a connection or tie-in to go into the new series but there wasn’t anything. It didn’t affect the story but I figured there would be some kind of reference of some nature but I didn’t see anything at all. They did drop a teaser for the new series at the release of the Defenders series and I am really looking forward to it even though it stars Jon Bernthal (a.k.a. Douchebag Shane).
There were some great little bits throughout the series like the banter between Luke and Danny before they become Power Man and Iron Fist. The awkwardness between Jessica and Luke. Foggy doing everything in his power to prevent Matt’s identity from being found out. The ending with Matt and how it will lead into Daredevil season 3 in which I am thinking his identity will be found out by Fisk if they go through that storyline.
I was glad at the re-integration of Elektra to the story as well in a much more badass kinda way. Now it does play off of one of the storyline in the comics where the Hand attempts to use her for their own purposes after her death. It isn’t played out completely the same way but Daredevil does manage to break through to her on an emotional level before the ending of the series and is left up in the air during the finale.
I really enjoyed the series from start to finish as it kept me invested and that may be in part to the length of the series and they managed to throw in a couple of ‘Holy shit’ moments that weren’t exactly expected to throw some additional chaos into it. I’ve been a fan of every Marvel Series and I am in the minority that I even enjoyed Iron Fist. I would have to say this series was probably in the Top 3 behind Daredevil Season 2 and maybe even Jessica Jones but that would depend on my mood.
If you have watched the previous series’ from Marvel on Netflix then this is easily a must watch and you have probably already watched it. If you have only taken in a few of the previous series then you are going to need to finish the other individual series to get a better understanding of this series. Hop to it! Get on that! Watch all of the series then crack out The Defenders you have some time before The Punisher drops later this year. What are you waiting for?!
