Movie Review: Wonder Woman
Updated: May 28, 2019
The 3rd installment of the newly revamped DC Movie universe has been out for a few weeks now. Understating there was a ton of drama over “female” only viewings and a guy actually suing over it, I decided to hang back to watch the film. The experience was definitely a lot better with a half full theatre. But, did Wonder Woman finally set a bar since the NolanVerse of the Batman?
“Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that's raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.”
First thing I need to mention is that Wonder Woman had a horrible decline/drop off in box office sales. Not to say the film wasn’t good or didn’t make a lot of money. The problem is that no one takes DC seriously in the film industry but they will watch the DCTV shows. But even those come with complaints and fading stories. And after the epic critic flop of Batman V Superman, I still think people were still shy to see it.
Wonder woman does the opposite. It soars right to the top 3 of DC films ever created. They utilized a tie in from Batman V Superman (the photo that Bruce emailed her) to help start the origins story of Diana Prince and mysterious island she grew up on. It was a fresh origins story for me as I never invested much time into Wonder Woman beyond the old cartoons and the occasional Justice League tie in, but the film run time was spent wisely. We had just enough time to invest ourselves into Diana origins story and still be able to meet all these unique characters along the way to further mold the stories main plot.
I was very skeptical that they picked Gal Gadot for this role. I understand she has a military background but she came into this role with little box office movies under her belt (Fast and the Furious) and she is not an amazon. Linda Carter was clearly an amazon. But, after her performance in BvS, she showed more promise than good ole Superman, so I hung in there for her. However, my opinion that Jamie Alexander (Thor) would have been the better pick and that she already provided herself as Lady Sif. But that’s my opinion. Gal is joined by Chris Pine. Captain kirk that will sleep with anyone, who plays the American Spy, Steve Trevor. He brings humor, charm and human side to Wonder Woman as he explains to her the real world. A perfect casting role in my opinion. They are also joined by a ton of supporting actors which few have been in a comic movie before Like Dany Huston(Wolverine: Origins), Ewen Bremner(Captain America), Robin Wright( Forrest Gump), and Connie Nielsen(Gladiator). Also, spoiler alert mention, Elena Anaya who played Doctor Poison will be in multiple undisclosed marvel films.
Is this film better than Batman V Superman? Easily. Is it better than Suicide Squad? In most ways, the action IMO is untouchable for Suicide Squad. But, if you haven’t see this film, I implore you do. Finally a full point in the win column for DC.
