Movie Review: Independence Day: Resurgence

Weeks after it’s release, I finally decided it was time to give the film a shot. Mainly because the options in the theatre were that bad, it seemed like one of the better choices. FYI, I am not overly a fan of sequels or reboots for hit films. Especially 2 decades later.
It is exactly 20 years after ID4 took place. Exactly. Does that not bother anyone else? I understand that it may have taken the distress signal some time to reach the “Mother” of the first Mother ship, but exactly 20 years? C’mon. It is a tad farfetched. But, they got back the entire cast short of Will Smith. Which I admit, I found extremely odd. Will Smith has never passed away from sequels, even if they were bad(MiB). That should have been an indication right there.
As I stated prior, exactly 20 years later, the kids have grown up, Earth is one united planet, they have engineered alien weapons, efficient space travel and Bill Pullman is a crazy old man. Characters from the previous ID4 are involved. Jeff Goldblum is searching the earth for signs of the Aliens possible return, Will Smith/Bill Pullman’s kids in ID4 grew up to become a fighter pilots and Brent Spiner(who was thought to be dead in the first one) wakes up from his 20 year coma since the encounter.
But they did bring in some new but forgettable characters. They also introduce Liam Hemsworth as the fiancé to Bill Pullmans daughter with extremely little back story and he has a sidekick who reminds me of Goose from Top Gun. I expected him to die at any minute. There was also a White House accountant and African warlord that had little backstory and was just there.

This film for 75% of the film was almost a carbon copy of the first film with slight modifications and the same placed jokes to keep the audience interested. But beyond that, it was too farfetched to be fully enjoyable. I spent more time trying to figure out the logic of the film than I actually did enjoy it.
Maybe if this film was made 5 years or even 10 years later after the first one, they could have kept the same magic of ID4. But sadly, it was too little too late for this film. It’s a good popcorn flick film, but that’s it.
