Movie Review: Bleed

Updated: May 29, 2019

Here we go again with another unheard of film I am sure to most of your eyes and ears. I come across all kinds of movies as I scour the interwebs and its vastness. Some I will watch due to the name, some due to the cover art, some maybe cause I know the cast members, maybe even a director I like. This one happened to be the cover art that caught my eye and I thought it might be interesting.

‘It seemed perfect - a new house, a new marriage, a child soon to be born. But when Sarah and Matt invite their friends to celebrate, the situation turns deadly as they enter a burned-out prison on a ghost hunt. ‘

IMDb rating     3.9/10        Rotten Tomatoes 60%

Well Bleed is a horror-esque thriller that follows a couple who are expecting a new baby soon and have recent moved into a home far from the cries of civilization and a larger town.  The creepy thriller stuff starts to foreshadow pretty early with a creepy policeman that helps Sarah change her tire in the opening of the movie.  Sarah’s brother crashes a get together that Sarah and her best friend Bree are having and he has brought his chronic lifemate and fellow ghost hunter with him.  The brother learns of a prison that burns down and then some of the cliche things happen.

I was wondering what the twist was in the film and it happened to be a connection between Sarah and a girl seen in flashbacks with the same mark on both of them.  The townsfolk are cultists and there is a even a supernatural entity that appears a couple of times.  There isn’t much of an explanation to it.  Here’s the cultists and the evil spirit and a girl with a birthmark on her and you make the connections.  I just kept scratching my head wondering when they were going to explain more and it never happened.  They brought up the history but it just never seemed to complete the story and connect all the dots.  Just so frustrating when all the pieces are there and just not connected 100%.

The cast doesn’t contain any major superstars but for thrillers and horrors these days you don’t need it.  I wouldn’t say the cast failed the movie in any way at all they all played their parts pretty well.  You have the main couple, a stoner couple and the best friend who happens to have seen things as a child and is on meds thinking that she is schizophrenic.  The cast have had some experience in television and movies so they were green going in.

A couple cliche moments of your thriller horror movies and I think it is important to have those in these kinds of movies.  People are expecting them and if you aren’t then you give it a bit of a twist but there are usually a couple of them in most thriller/horrors.  I honestly couldn’t think of any that don’t have any of the major cliches off the top of my head.  I will give them a little credit with the ending because I wasn’t exactly expecting it and it wasn’t a horrible ending it made sense.

The movie never had a wide release it had a limited run in the US and then was focused on the VOD and rental market.  I couldn’t even find any numbers on it.  I can’t see the budget being all that high and I have a feeling they weren’t all that profitable with the film.  I could be wrong I don’t have anything to compare or analyze.  Looked like it was a major project for everyone involved but the actors seeing as they seemed to have the most experience in their roles compared to the producers and directors etc.

If you like thrillers and horrors you may wanna rent it for something different.  It isn’t that good and some people enjoy those types of films.  It gives off a B-movie vibe from the beginning but never has the greatness of a good B-movie.  I am trying to explain it and I know I am probably doing a horrible job.  But I have a feeling once you read this that you are going to avoid this particular film anyways unless you are a glutton for punishment and I know some of you are.  I think it is time for some mainstream movies and actors.  These unknowns and indie films are really starting to hurt my brain over here.
