Movie Review: 10 Cloverfield Lane

Updated: May 28, 2019

This is not a direct sequel in any regards. If anything this is a film that occurs at the same time with the original film, but in a different location and different circumstances. Seeing that John Goodman was a main character, it was hard to pass up the opportunity to watch this film.

As I said, this is not a direct sequel. The film follows a woman named Michelle(played by Mary Winstead) who leaves her fiancé/husband, life and city behind only mere hours before the “attack” occurs. As she is driving through the country, she gets into a horrible car accident and awakes in a creepy dungeon like room. Leg busted and disorientated from the crash, she clearly thinks she was kidnapped. However, Frank(played by John Goodman) explains to her that she was in an accident and he found her. He also goes to explain that there was an attack but refuses to get into much detail. All she is informed that the end of the world occurred and she was in a Fallout Shelter.

As the story progresses, Michelle meets another character named Emmitt(played by John Gallagher) who also was in the Fallout shelter, but he wasn’t saved by frank, he literally had to fight he was into the shelter. We learn that Frank was in the Navy and completed work on satellite systems, but was also a conspiracy theorist which explained his erratic behavior. Emmitt helped Frank build the shelter and once the attack started, he fought his way into the shelter.

But was it an alien attack? Or was an attack from opposing Force? One thing is for sure, Frank is quite unhinged. John Goodman, which in a million years may I add, did I ever think he would play this type of character, did it very well. His character seemed to suffered from many different illnesses. Paranoia, OCD, and maybe even was Bi-Polar. I cannot honestly remember a time that John Goodman played a character like this before. But I was pleasantly surprised how amazing he was.

Unlike Cloverfield, this film focuses more the mental hardships from being locked away in a Fallout shelter for an undetermined time and the paranoia it cause after so much time.

The downfall? The ending. Completely unrealistic and extremely unlikely that survival would still occur. But, without giving away the ending, you will wish like everyone else I know did, that the last 20 minutes was removed from the film. Could be another sequel? Possibly. It was left quite open for it to occur. Only time will tell.
