Movie Review: Vendetta

Updated: May 27, 2019

‘A detective pushed beyond his limits will stop at nothing for vengeance. When his wife is killed by a criminal that he put away, Mason, a hard-nosed detective, deliberately gets arrested in order to get revenge. While inside, Mason discovers a new criminal enterprise that those behind it would kill to protect.’

IMDb rating  4.8/10        Rotten Tomatoes 36%

The movie itself starts off alright as your typical policeman vengeance style flick. Criminal gets caught, criminal gets out and kills policeman's loved one, policeman kills criminals brother.  Lo and behold they are both at the same prison!  Gee I wonder what is going to happen now.  I guess with a name like Vendetta you kinda already have an idea and inkling what the movie is going to be about.  No reason to hold back on the believability.

There are just too many things that don't quite click at all and made me scratch my head to how things happened in the flick.  The first oddball moment was actually right in the beginning of the movie when Danvers chasing down the Abbots with his partner.  You catch a glimpse of Victor (Big Show) on a catwalk with a 9mm in his hand and I burst out laughing.  Looked like a toy gun in his hand.  You would think a man that size as a criminal ringleader of sorts that's either he would have a nice custom job or something maybe a little bigger like a .50 Desert Eagle?  Nope standard 9mm I couldn’t hold back the laughter.

After Danvers is imprisoned for killing Victor's brother he is beaten and begins his revenge and kills 3 henchmen in a matter of like 3 days.  How does not one person that isn't on this corrupt payroll notice and blow the horn on what has happened.  You know the inmates are talking and you would think the guards would hear something but no completely oblivious.  Just seemed a little far fetched but who knows if they talk about black sites in these shows and have places like Guantanamo I guess I can see it happening *shrug*.  The last thing was the final fight scene in the prison yard with the inmates and guards just too many things irked me about it to make it believable.  The movie started off alright and just gradually went downhill in the believability category and lost a bunch of points with me for that alone.

The casting was sufficient for what was needed.  A number of faces I recognized Dean Cain as Danvers, Big Show as Victor, Kyra Zagorsky (Helix) as Danvers’ wife and Ben Hollingsworth (Code Black) as Gainer (Danvers’ partner).  Did they need an over the top cast for a WWE Studios film of this nature not at all.  Being that it was a WWE Studios film we aren’t talking a major budget on the movie I am sure.  I couldn’t find exact number but I know we aren’t talking $100M budget that is for certain.  If I am wrong and they spent that much than they spent way too much money.  Not that the WWE couldn’t afford it that is for sure and wouldn’t be the first time they dumped a tonne of money into a bad idea, XFL ring a bell for some of you?

Produced by WWE Studios and directed by the twins that did Dead Hooker In A Trunk (Jen and Sylvia Soska).  Now I can’t fault them for the flick because they didn’t write the screenplay they were only directing it and can only work with what they are given. You can only polish a turd so much.  And yes, you can Mythbusters did it look it up if you have to.  If I was given a choice as to which to watch again.  I vote Dead Hooker in a Trunk all the way.

Would I purchase the movie?  Not a chance.  Would I recommend it as a rental?  Only if you had a choice between Vendetta and Manos: The Hands of Fate and nothing else.  It wasn’t anything spectacular and I admit I only grabbed it after seeing the Soska twins in their hand in it from my previous review of Dead Hooker in a Trunk.  I figured it couldn’t be that big of a bomb moviewise.  Took me a while to get to it I admit I have had it for a number of months but other movies kept popping in a priority and of course television scheduling got in the way as well trying to keep up.  I am glad it only took up around 85 minutes of my time much more than that and I think I would have gotten visably upset.
